Bulbs: a gardener's buried treasure
Bulbs are a special type of perennial that maintain their own storehouses of nutrients in various kinds of root structures.
What we normally call "bulbs" include different types of these "buried treasure" root structures. Here are some examples:
- Bulb - tulip, narcissus, daffodil, hyacinth, muscari, lily, snowdrops, amaryllis, allium
- Corm - gladiolus, crocus, freesia
- Tuber - dahlia, lily-of-the-valley
- Tuberous Root - tuberous begonia, dahlia, daylily
- Rhizome - iris, caladium, canna
All these gather food for the following year's blooms during the current blooming and growing period. So, when tulips bloom this spring, they're also storing food for next year.
